چکیده

A liquid piston concept is proposed to improve the efficiency of gas compression and expansion. Because a liquid can conform to an irregular chamber volume, the surface area to volume ratio in the gas chamber can be maximized using a liquid piston. This creates near-isothermal operation, which minimizes energy lost to heat generation. A liquid piston eliminates gas leakage and replaces sliding seal friction with viscous friction. The liquid can also be used as a medium to carry heat into and out of the compression chamber. A simulation is presented of the heat transfer and frictional forces for a reciprocating piston and a liquid piston. In the application of an air compressor, with a pressure ratio of 9.5:1 and a cycle frequency of 20 Hz, the liquid piston decreased the energy consumption by 19% over the reciprocating piston. The liquid piston and the reciprocating piston exhibited a total efficiency of 83% and 70% respectively. The liquid piston demonstrated significant improvements in the total compression efficiency in comparison to a conventional reciprocating piston. This gain in efficiency was accomplished through increasing the heat transfer during the gas compression by increasing the surface area to volume ratio in the compression chamber. 2008 Elsevier Ltd. PD Compression: A Quasi-Static or Dynamic Process?

Gas compression in a positive displacement (PD) type piston engine, or piston compressor, has long been modeled as a quasi-static process in which the piston is assumed to move infinitely slow inside a cylinder. The gas compression mechanism is therefore regarded as being governed by the basic thermodynamic principles. Energy transfer is accomplished quasi-statically with a piston reducing the ...

Optimization of the Axial Porosity Distribution of Porous Inserts in a Liquid-piston Gas Compressor Using a One-dimensional Formulation

A One-Dimensional (One-D) numerical model to calculate transient temperature distributions in a liquid-piston compressor with porous inserts is presented. The liquid-piston compressor is used for Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES), and the inserted porous media serve the purpose of reducing temperature rise during compression. The One-D model considers heat transfer by convection in both the ...

The reactivity controlled compression ignition engines have high thermal efficiency and low exhaust emission of nitrogen oxides and soot because of low temperature combustion. In this type of engines, low reactivity fuel is injected to air through intake port and high reactivity fuel is injected into the combustion chamber during compression stroke. The aim of current study is to investigate th...

Optimization of Compression Chamber to Reduce the Viscous Friction in the Piston-Cylinder Clearance

The compression chamber of a hermetic reciprocating compressor is, normally, formed by a cylinder and a piston which present a constant clearance during the piston displacement inside the compression chamber. This configuration has the advantage of a good sealing, however, during the most part of compression, the pressure difference between compression chamber and internal compressor ambient is...
